The BNB Re-Union
Late summer (2018) Bob Graham was driving past a business where he thought Bruce Baier might be working. Stopping in to see if he was right and to hopefully say “hello” that summer day – was the beginning of the next steps of the journey that brings us to today.
Neither Bob or Bruce had played a stringed instrument for almost fifty years (47 for Bruce and 46 for Bob). By the summer of 2019 – Bob and Bruce had begun meeting regularly (both with a guitar in hand) – trying to learn to play again. It was truly a shaky beginning. However, from the very start they wondered – “Where might Nancy be???”
A fifty year high school reunion – and a possible “talent show” escalated the thoughts of a potential “band” re-union. So thoughts of finding where Nancy might be, became much more important now, and soon Bob arrived for a rehearsal and announced he had a phone number. The phone call was made. The call was answered and four simple words spoken – “guess who this is?” Without hesitation – Nancy said “Bob Graham??!!!” Similar immediate recognition of the second voice – Bruce, and plans were quickly made for a trip to visit with Nancy who luckily lived not too far away.
We all three have stories to tell that explain the many years that passed where, for one reason or another, we all stopped playing and singing. For Bob and Bruce – almost fifty. For Nancy – who followed school with a wonderful singing career in her earlier years, singing in various bands, more than twenty-five years.
That meeting with Nancy was on Dobson Street in November 2019. So – BNB eventually became DOBSON STREET BNB!
We began rehearsing in January 2020 – trying to find just ONE song that we might play at the High School re-union. Having already scheduled a winter holiday, Bob went to Florida in February for the month. He just got back – returning to weekly rehearsal, when COVID hit hard and fast.
In spite of all the delays, set backs and hardships during lock-downs, plus the nagging fear of getting together with anyone – any where, we found a song. Then another. Then another.
We were able to find Wayne Willson too, hoping to complete the quartet – but distance prevented the completion of the group as it was originally. The three continued to work on their playing and singing.
By the time the High School re-union actually happened in June 2022 – we had become the evening’s entertainment for our classmates at the Fenelon Falls Legion. In spite of zero time rehearsing with the three, Wayne Willson joined in on a couple of songs with the three, clearly bringing back the original sound from 1970 – to the amazement of our classmates.
Today Branch 238 of the Royal Canadian Legion in Fenelon Falls, is our most favorite venue to play. Feels just like going home.
